I arrived at the gate early and there was a flight heading to MSP that was not full. I asked if I could go standby on the earlier flight and the answer was yes but it would cost me $100.00 Ridiculous! So I decided to stay with my flight which was 1 hr later. I asked if there was a exit row available...Yes but it will cost you $20 to upgrade your seat. I asked if there was an aile seat closer to the front. Yes but it was also going to cost another $20. I tried to get a seat assignment when I booked but the online seating was not available. I tried earlier the day of the flight but it would only let me book a middle seat. Apparently United has made a little extra room for folks in the first ten rows and it cost you an extra $20 to seat there. Thus, you guessed it, the seats further back now have even less leg room. My knees were right up against the seat in front of me and I'm not that tall. Between baggage fees and now having to pay for reasonable seating I will consider driving or another airline.

United check-in was almost empty and thus very fast, but security clearance at O'Hare was a nightmare-- very slow, and we were directed to a different security portal a long way away after waiting in line for some time. The total time to clear security was approximately 35 minutes. For someone with arthritic knees, that's a long time to stand! United personnel were professional and courteous, though the gate experience--unbelievably long list of "preferred" boarding categories and red carpet baloney--was annoying, as usual.
