Air New Zealand Premium Economy & Biz Class Sale to London

Air New Zealand is offering seats in Premium Economy for $1,946 round-trip to London, from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Honolulu. This sale is good for departures from now until February 29 of next year, and all travel must be booked by February 29.

We checked Air New Zealand's site for Premium Economy seats on travel from Los Angeles to London on July 19 through July 31 and found the $1,946 sale fare with no problems. That ends up being about $2,189 with taxes.

Business class along this route is also on sale, for travel now through February 29, for $3,780 round-trip. We searched Air New Zealand for business class for travel on July 19 through July 31, and found $6,203 round-trip. Since that's such a difference from the advertised sale fare, we tried June 19 through June 27 and got a fare of $5,113 round-trip, which isn't much better.

Back on ITAsoftware, we tried searching again for our original July 19 through July 31 travel dates and found that American Airlines and United both had the best price for non-stop business class for this route, at $3,088 round-trip. And for just a smidgen more ($3,108 round-trip) you could travel on British Airways.

How are the fares from Honolulu? We wish we knew. Instead we just received this message over and over: "Reservation system internal error - cannot price this itinerary, please try a different flight." Could that internal error also be the culprit behind our way-off business class fares from LA too? Air New Zealand's sale fares are generally easy to book, so we'll chalk this up to some sort of technical glitch.

WestJet 50% Off Sale

WestJet is having a 50% off sale, good for Tuesday through Thursday travel and Saturday travel until June 30. This sale expires April 26.

  • Montreal to Vancouver is listed at $199 CAD one-way. We checked into travel from May 15 through May 22 and easily found that sale fare, which comes out to $549 CAD round-trip, including taxes. Or $488 US. Our search on ITAsoftware for these same dates lists the lowest fare as $513 US round-trip, also on WestJet. Obviously not quite as good as the fare we found on the WestJet site.

  • Calgary to Victoria is listed at $94 CAD one-way. Using June 7 through June 12 as our travel dates, we found $94 each-way, which comes to $273 CAD round-trip, with taxes. Or about $243 US. Plugging in these dates on ITAsoftware, we found $245 US.

  • Halifax to Ottawa is $124 CAD one-way. With June 12 through June 19 as our dates of travel, we easily found that $124 fare, which ends up being about $378 CAD round-trip, with taxes. Or about $336 US.  That's much better than the $453 US fare we found using the same dates on ITAsoftware.

All in all, these fares are better than what others are offering. Better hurry though! All purchases must be made by April 26.

Spirit Sale from $29 each way

Posted by George Hobica on Saturday, April 21, 2007

Spirit Airlines is having another sale, this one expiring at midnight on Monday April 23. Although this isn't as spectacular as their 1 cent and $8 sales, it's still not too bad, with deals such as Atlanta to Las Vegas for $198 RT and Atlantic City to Tampa for $118 RT.

Azores Express Announces New Summer Schedule

Posted by Tracy Stewart on Friday, April 20, 2007

Azores Express will soon begin their summer schedule, adding extra flights from Boston's Logan International to the Azores and Lisbon, Portugal. On Saturdays beginning June 9, direct flights to Terceira will be available, and on Thursdays and Sundays starting June 21, non-stop flights to Lisbon will be available. Additionally, four weekly flights will be available from Boston to Sao Miguel, the main island in the Azores archipelago. For those traveling from Rhode Island, direct service from Providence to Ponta Delgada will begin on June 22. Azores Express offers the only direct flights from Boston to Lisbon, and fares will range from $580 to $846.

We found a fare of $868 round-trip on Azores Express, for travel from June 12 through June 19, from Boston to Terceira Island. Not bad at all for mid June. These same dates on orbitz.com show a fare of $1,184 round-trip on Sata International, which is actually the same company as Azores Express.

Eurofly Increases Flights for Summer

Posted by Tracy Stewart on Friday, April 20, 2007

Eurofly (has announced their summer schedule from JFK, which includes two new destinations. Flights to Pescara begin May 8, and depart from JFK every Tuesday, and flights to Lamezia Terme begin on May 12 and depart every Saturday. Summer service from New York to Palermo begins May 6, Naples begins May 7, and Bologna begins May 8. That's great, but what about the fares?

  • New York to Lamezia Terme, from May 12 through May 18, is $970 round-trip, including taxes, on Eurofly. A quick search for these same dates on orbitz.com gives us a lower fare of $883 round-trip, with taxes. Unfortunately, this includes two stops. The best one stop fare is $896 round-trip, including taxes, on Delta Airlines.
  • New York to Palermo, from June 7 through June 15, is $809 round-trip, including taxes, on Eurofly. Orbitz lists the best fare as $818 round-trip with Air France and Alitalia, which includes two stops. Eurofly is listed as the best non-stop, but at $1,031 round-trip, with taxes.
  • New York to Bologna, from June 16 through June 24, is $999 round-trip, including taxes, on Eurofly. Orbitz lists Eurofly as also having the lowest fare, but at $1,092.

Hello Kitty: You Own the Lipgloss, Now fly the Airline

Posted by Tracy Stewart on Thursday, April 19, 2007

An invisible, lucite Wonder Woman plane probably wouldn't inspire much confidence in travelers. Or fly. At all. Neither would Snoopy's flying (vaguely creepy) WWII dog house. And good luck staffing an airline around The Littles. We guess some characters just better lend themselves to aviation, like, uhm,  Hello Kitty apparently. Taiwanese carrier EVA Air partnered with Sanrio, the makers of Hello Kitty, to create Hello Kitty Air. Launched in 2005, the first two jets flew daily from Taipei, Taiwan to Fukuoka and Tokyo, Japan. Are there that many Hello Kitty fans to necessitate two daily flights? We guess so, because as of last October, EVA's Kitty Airlines added more destinations to Hello Kitty Air, including Taipei to Osaka, Sendai, and Nagoya.
EVA's Hello Kitty Air was awarded 'Best Livery' in the Wallpaper* Magazine 2007 Design Awards, so it must be ok, right? The food does look cute. I mean, they've seared Hello Kitty's face into the vienna sausages. If that doesn't inspire confidence in travelers, then I just  don't know what to do for you.

Spirit 1 cent sale expires April 19

Posted by George Hobica on Wednesday, April 18, 2007

Spirit, what else is new, is having yet another 1 cent sale! And you can actually book tickets for basically nothing more than taxes. Bo, our dedicated fare hound, has been researching and posting these fares all day. Thanks Bo, we know it's tedious work (he's actually been seeing which fares you can actually fashion into a logical round-trip, since these fares must be bought round-trip and they're not always available).

They also have some cheap $8 one-way fares. Sometimes seats are only available in one direction and not the return, but even if you have to pay full fare the other way you'll still save money. Click here to see the sale.
