Amazing Thanksgiving/Winter Fares to Barcelona & Zurich

Posted by Tracy Stewart on Thursday, May 6, 2010

Anyone willing to trade turkey for tapas this Thanksgiving? If so, we've spotted some puh-retty major fares for travel to Spain. New York to Barcelona for $270 round-trip, incl. all taxes? Ahem:

And we've found similarly low fares ($270-$411 range) throughout winter, on travel to Barcelona, as well as Zurich. Boston departures available too.

Wonder how much higher the summer fares for 2010 will be.. The thought of the possibility of having to fly Lufthansa made me cringe no matter how low the advertised price is. I had to fly on their biz class for my tech job a couple of years ago from Frankfurt (FRA) to LAX without my (Caucasian) spouse (the relevance of "Caucasian" will soon be apparent). I was the only Asian in the biz class. I am a seasoned traveler (35 yrs flying international airlines), a polite, soft-spoken science PhD. As soon as other biz class passengers got on board, the flight attendants (FAs) hang the passengers' jackets in the front cupboard, help with their carry-ons. But the FAs never bothered to approach me. I left my suit jacket on the back of my seat. When I woke up after dozing off for an hour, I noticed my suit jacket was lying on the floor behind my seat, outside the bathroom (my seat was in front of the bathroom), having been trampled on and left there. They skipped me when they gave out water and bread but fortunately the nice Italian gentleman from Turin seated next to me shared his water with me. Attempts on trying to get some attention to get some water was futile and fruitless. As my pens were in my laptop bag and the bag is tightly wedged into the storage compartment, I asked the flight attendant if I could borrow a pen. She said no. Later, another (Caucasian) passenger asked for a pen, and a flight attendant brought out a whole tray.. I could only exchange glances with the nice Italian gentleman and we both shook our heads. I wrote a complaint letter to Lufthansa within a week of that awful flight. Many months later, I received their standard spiel that guarantees that Lufthansa will never ever discriminate against any citizens of the world. Lufthansa would rather be in denial rather than looking into their customer disservice. My family and friends have decided to avoid Lufthansa after hearing my experience. For me, any other carrier would be a vast improvement over Lufthansa.

@sapphire65 Those fares were available on just about all web sites, including Lufthansa's... there were dozens of them. But they lasted only a few hours. Make sure you sign up for alerts from your airport to various European destinations. And to "someone's" comment, he or she is being pretty ridiculous. With over 1.1 million subscribers who send us tips on fares they've found, a large staff of fare searchers, and access to the same fare data that other sites use, we don't need to rely on other sites to find deals.

This was a great find!! I got NYC to Barcelona in November for $265 RT (Lufthansa via Munich)- almost as good as last year's trip - $222 RT on Iberia. I love when they forget the taxes!!!!

Bad journalism? Au contraire mon frere, we lifted from no one. The above fares were found by one of our fare analysts yesterday afternoon, after a routine search for Zurich via Kayak returned an unusually low fare on Lufthansa. Our analyst then went straight to the Lufthansa site, where he found other cities available for even less. Meanwhile, other folks here at AFWD were finding similar fares available for other routes, and - at the same time - we were receiving emails and Facebook comments from subscribers who were just as excited as us to report they'd spotted these fares as well. Not sure if you're familiar with how this whole 'internet' thing works, but everyone has access to it, by which we mean these fares are posted publicly by the airlines and aggregator sites, and any old schmo is free to search for and book them. It's just that some of us are a little better at finding low fares than others, and our traffic seems to agree.

This is the second time AFWD has published a fare deal without offering attribution. Last time it was FT, and this time it was FC. Bad journalism guys.

Looks like they forgot to include the fuel surcharge on that one. Now the taxes are $422.26!
