Delta and Continental raise checked bag fees again

Posted by George Hobica on Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Delta, the world's largest airline, has announced new domestic US and Canadian checked bag fees. Delta will charge $23 (up from $15) for the first checked bag, with a $2 surcharge if the fee is paid at the airport rather than online before departure. For the second checked bag, the new fee is $32 (up from $25), with a $3 surcharge if paid at the airport.

Before the hike, passengers paid $15 for the first bag with a $5 airport surcharge and $25 for the second bag with a $5 airport fee.

These fees are one-way, so a passenger checking two bags at the airport would pay $120 round-trip. Canadian customers pay the same fees in Canadian dollars.

Continental also raised its first and second bag fees, matching Delta's. No doubt other carriers will follow.

What is wrong with you! Most of scrimp to go on vacation and you feel its alright to charge even more money for luggage!! Especilaly when you treat our luggage like its a punching bag!!! We've already lost 2 sets!!!Give us a break....we work for a living too!!

Airlines are forcing us to drive rather than fly. I just canceled a flight from CA to UT and figured for the cost of checking bags for a ski trip, we can drive and save $$. Won't have to rent a car on the other end either. And with getting to the airport 2-4 hrs early, delays in connecting flights, we can drive the distance in 12 hours and would have taken us nearly 7 to fly. Does that make sense?

When airlines began charging for bags, I wrote an article titled "Airlines Promoting Nudity". If they continue to raise baggage fees, clothing is going to become an "option" for more travelers, though it could get rather cold during the winter months.

I got caught up in this Extra baggage ploy with Continental Airlines. I paid for an extra bag upon departure...then was quite surprised when I was charged again on my return flight. Their website did not state that I had to pay for both to and return. I wrote to them and that it was to be "understood"! I then wrote to them to ask what I was supposed to do with the 2nd bag on my trip back home and they said that sometimes, people only return with one bag! The extra charges that I thought I was saving with Continental...would have been the same cost of a ticket with a much better airline, which I will use in the future. also I will be able to take 2 bags both ways...all included in the price of one ticket! Lesson learned...cheaper flights are not always the Cheapest!

Um, should have been "let's HEAR it". You're still asleep. (@Gatorstern)

When will this end? They might as well raise the fares and be done with it! I'm getting tired of the carryon baggers; whose bags should have to be checked hogging the overhead space! Make it fair to all of us.

Wasn't it just yesterday that AFW was saying that fares haven't really gone up year over year? Yet you used to be able to take a suitcase (or 2). Now that will cost you an extra ticket. May be time to rethink the posting.

Ok...I'm half asleep. That should have been "let's here it"
by Gatorstern on Tuesday, January 12, 2010
Let's here is for Southwest!!! I will fly them instead of the other carriers whenever possible.

So far United, US Air and American haven't matched. Matter of time?

Next they are going to charge us to go through security, and perhaps to use the chairs at the gate. There will also be a fee to use the walkway to the plane. $20 per person "boarding fee"

Well, time to dust off the Zeppelins. For the fees paid, travel should be a little more luxurious.

Outrageous! When is this going to end?
