Airlines cut more jobs, Continental joins United and US Air in charging extra for airport bag check

    You'll now have an extra incentive to book directly on Continental's Web site: for travel booked now but for depatures on or after Aug 19, you'll pay an additional $5 for the first and second checked bags unless you pay in advance online, a move they're copying from United and US Airways.

    And there are job cuts. Writes Mr. Mutzabaugh:

    "In a morning of grim airline news, Continental announced plans to cut 1,700 jobs while Southwest said about 1,400 of its employees accepted voluntary buyouts. United added flight cuts to the mix, saying it would reduce capacity on international routes by 7% more than it had already announced. The three carriers detailed the cuts in their respective second-quarter earnings reports, all out today...." read more.
