Air Azul to get new name, new planes

Posted by Tracy Stewart on Tuesday, May 5, 2009

Remember Air Azul? Tiny airline? Planned to fly between Newark, Baltimore, and Melbourne FL, with service scheduled to begin next month? Yes?

Well, as it turns out, they won't be flying anywhere, at least not under the name Air Azul. Maybe it was too similar to Azul Airlines, the Brazilian offshoot of JetBlue. Or heck, maybe it was too similar to JetBlue, what with a nod to the very same color. But now they've kicked the blues entirely and gone with a new name. JetAmerica! See what they did there?

In addition to the new yankee doodle moniker, JetAmerica is making changes to the fleet. Flying larger Boeing 737-800s means more seats and lower fares.

Service is set to begin July 1.

Now the confusion is cleared up. I was totally baffled by this as a frequent traveler to Brazil and airline watcher.
