Air Canada 15% off promo code savings

Posted by George Hobica on Wednesday, December 24, 2008

Because we're signed up for fare alerts directly from Air Canada, we learned about this 15% discount deal. The promo is valid for travel through May 31, 2009. This discount is available in economy as well as premium cabins, for both intra-Canadian and international routes.

So what this means, in case it's not obvious, is that every Air Canada fare you see on Kayak, Orbtiz, or those fare comparison and fare drop alert sites is 15% higher than it could or should be, at least for travel through May 31.

It continually amazes me that our media friends have not caught onto the fact that there is no incentive for a site like Kayak or Orbitz to alert their users to these promo code deals. These deals can only be booked on the airlines' own web sites by plugging in the promo code into the promo code box, and therefore the online travel agencies and meta search engines cannot monetize them.

Will flying from Toronto to Tokyo. Just want to know if there are any promo codes that I could use? Thanks you!!!

Travel in Air Canada with 15% off is a very interesting deal. If you are extended the promotional code till Dec, i think it will be the cheapest fare for a long term.

I will travel from Sydney - Australia to Vancouver or Whitehorse - Canada in April and return in May. Any recommendation for cheap tickets or promotion code would be thankful.

Hi George, thanks for the response. I agree that people do need to start using the airline's web site, in fact I have the Spirit Air $9 membership and have more than earned the money back in purchasing tickets: 16 (one-way tickets per person) ORD-FLL @ $9 each, 4x FLL-LGA @ $9, 8x DTW-LAS @ $29 [taking those latter flights on Jan 5th actually].

Basically people need to do some shopping around and check your web site for coupon codes, or even Google coupon codes to see what's out there, it's amazing what is there. I always search for coupon codes when doing rental cars, try to find the cheapest rates on kayak and a few other web sites, check previous won bids at www.betterbidding.com and www.biddingfortravel.com then start bidding on Priceline. Sometimes I can find a coupon code that offers a better deal, but usually Priceline beats them all the time [tho I usually book last second since it's non-refundable].

Happy New Year to you too, hopefully 2009 will be a year of record low airfares, I love to fly!

To Matthew:
Happy new year! Thanks for your thoughtful comment. Sorry that I didn't make myself clear. My only concern is to save people money on airfare, regardless of the source. I sincerely believe that the best airfare deals we find day to day are the promo code sales that are increasingly being launched by the airlines, directing traffic from the consumer directly to the airlines' sites, with absolutely no middleman.

Whether that middleman is Travelocity or Kayak or any other site is irrelevant. So I am only trying to alert consumers to the fact that they should sign up for the airline's promotions and frequent flyer programs (or just look at our blog, since we list them all as soon as we find them--although as you point out, some promo codes are individually generated, so it's best to sign up) because otherwise they will end up paying more than they need to for air travel.

Whether it's the recent 50% off promo codes on Southwest to/from Las Vegas, Buffalo, New Orleans, Denver, and Salt Lake City; or Virgin's 2 for 1 deal systemwide, or JetBlue's frequent 10% or $30 off deals, or Airtran's recent $25 off deal, or Spirit's $9 fare club deals, or the fact that Singapore Airlines sometimes sells LAX to Tokyo on its own site for less than it would be listed on Kayak (Kayak does not list that fare because you'll only see it if you start your search from a specific page at singaporeair.com), or this recent 15% off Air Canada deal.... the point is that the airlines are not sharing these fares with Kayak or Orbitz or any other middleman.

Therefore, if the airline sites have significantly lower fares, it can be argued that consumers are overpaying if they book their fares any other way.

Simulator: airfares change all the time, and vary dependig on when you want to travel. Right now, for travel in February for example, we see $339 RT including tax for Dulles and National to YUL, but only for connecting flights. Nonstops are in the mid 400's.

What is going on in the DC to Montreal market? Last week UA and Air Canada had nonstops for $382 RT, Since yesterday they are now $845 (US). Is this a seasonal market?

I don't know why you guys keep referring to Kayak as a travel agent web site, when in fact it is way more helpful than the likes of Orbitz or Travelocity. Most people need to find airfares on specific dates and times, and Kayak's search uses multiple web sites to find those flights, including some of the airline's own [since most travel agent sites except for Priceline has a booking fee]. Some airline web sites don't work with Kayak, either because of their web site having some strange search function, or because the airline is preventing Kayak from doing such [as we know AA did for a while].

Kayak is an excellent place to start a search, so instead of discouraging your readers from searching multiple web sites, you guys should start listing the best web sites to use. Also, ITA Software is great for finding airfares directly from the airlines, plus Priceline for purchase since they lack a booking fee, although trying on the airline's web site is best since there are deals like the one you mention here.

Please guys, post something about booking tickets so people understand these things. It's pretty clear given how confused people are at booking one-way tickets etc that they find on here, that they are very confused.

Matthew, I think what they're trying to point out is that the fares are often lower on the airlines' web site, in this case by 15%. Maybe Kayak and Orbitz are good place to begin a search, but not end the search bec. as I have often found out, these promo discount code thingies are not available on Kayak or Expedia or whatever. So i applaud AFWD for being honest about this (I'll bet they make money from Kayak/Orbitz/Etc but not by sending ppl to the airline's promo codes)
by HHH on Thursday, December 25, 2008
Nowhere did I refer to Kayak as an online travel agency in the post. They are a meta search engine as far as I know. But neither an OTA nor a meta search will include promo code fares. Matthew, if you prefer paying 15% or 30% or even twice what you need to because you're hooked on Kayak or Sidestep or whatever, then that's your choice. And referring to HHH's comment above, yep you hit the nail on the head. Airfarewatchdog makes money each time we send people to the Orbitz's and Priceline's and even Kayak. So why are we lowering our revenue by telling you about Air Canada's promo codes and other airlines' promo codes, when doing so earns us nothing? Well, obviously it earns us something else that's more important, and I'll leave it to you all to figure that out.

The code has been updated: JVM2NFA1. The one in that screenshot no longer works.

I also think it's now been extended to Dec 28th.

Thanks for pointing this out!

by Brian on Thursday, December 25, 2008
By the way, it's entirely possible that the promo code in the screen shot is individually generated for each subscriber to the Air Canada alerts. So the lesson here is to play the game and sign up for the alerts yourself so you can profit from them in the future.
