United ups second checked bag fee to $50

Posted by George Hobica on Monday, September 15, 2008

United Airlines has doubled its fee for a second checked bag to $50, citing volatile fuel prices.
United says the $50 one-way fee will apply for tickets bought beginning Tuesday for travel beginning November 10 within the U.S. or to or from Canada, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Travelers in first or business classes, "Premier" frequent fliers and active-duty military personnel traveling on orders will be exempt. United estimated the $50 fee would apply to about one out of every seven customers.

I usually take 3 ski trips out to Colorado and Utah each skiing season and I have taken United from Newark airport. My wife and I always bring one bag each, one bag for our ski boots and one bag for our skis. If United thinks I am going to be gouged by their excessive baggage fees they can think again. I will fly Continental or not fly at all and start using some of the ski resorts in New York state or Vermont...places I can drive to.

We've long advocated this. Click on the "Avoiding checked luggage fees" link at the left of this page.

When all these idiots go out of business thanks to their nickle-and-dime fees I for one won't shed any tears. Thank goodness for Southwest!

I've decided that instead of screwing with the airlines charging me extra to put a suitcase into their cargo hold, I'm going UPS my clothing ahead of me. We own a motorcycle and we often mail our dirty clothes home before returning so that we don't have to re-pack them on the bike. I figure, why not do the same with a flight? At least the likelihood of Fed Ex or UPS losing my package is much lower than the incomeptents at the airlines and, I get a tracking number so that if it is lost, I can find it again. I'll pack our clothes into a cardboard box, notify the hotel in advance and have it shipped ahead of me. Why not? Without the suitcase, the weight will be considerably less and I bet we can ship both of our clothes for less than the $50 surcharge.
