American to add $15 fee for first checked bag; others sure to follow; other fees hiked. Yikes!

And the fees just keep on coming!

Customers who purchase domestic economy class tickets on or after May 12, 2008 but before June 15, 2008 may check one bag for free and check a second bag for $25 each way. But, if you purchase domestic economy class tickets on or after June 15, 2008 you will be charged $15 each way for the first checked bag and $25 each way for the second checked bag.

There are some exceptions:

  • Customers traveling on an international itinerary to destinations beyond the U.S., the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, or Canada
  • Customers who purchase full-fare tickets in Economy Class
  • Customers who purchase Business or First Class tickets
  • Customers flying on AA codeshare flights not operated by American Airlines, American Eagle or AmericanConnection®
  • Customers traveling on government or military fares
  • Military passengers on active duty
  • AAdvantage Executive Platinum®, AAdvantage Platinum® or AAdvantage Gold® members
  • oneworld Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby members
  • Customers flying on the same reservation as an AAdvantage Executive Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum or AAdvantage Gold member or oneworld Alliance Emerald, Sapphire or Ruby member regardless of frequent flier status or fare type (not applicable to group bookings)
  • AAnytime® Economy Class AAdvantage award tickets, MileSAAver(SM) or AAnytime First and Business Class AAdvantage award tickets
  • First and Business Class upgrades confirmed prior to check in
  • AAirpass travel

In addition, AA has upped the charge for additional checked bags:

For flights within the United States the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Canada:

  • $100 per piece for the 3rd, 4th and 5th checked bags
  • $200 per piece for the 6th checked bag and any additional pieces

More info from AA.com

And the pet in cabin fee has been increased $20 each way to $100.

So here's not atypical scenario:

You found a $98 RT fare between Chicago and Kansas city on American, and you're bringing Fluffy into the cabin with you and checking two bags. You can now add $280 to your credit card, almost three times the cost of your ticket!

The Legacy airlines seem to wonder why they aren't able to make money. The VALUE isn't there! With the new Nickel-and-Dime charges/fees these air carriers DESERVE to go out of business and let someone else who knows how to deliver value have their chance.

I predict fights in the aisle as two (2) people try to place their carry-on in the last space, which will only hold one (1) bag. I know I will not want to pay the check baggage fee. Where is AA going to put all those carry on bags? Who is going to determine who can carry on a bag and who cannot? What so you suppose will happen when all the over head storage is full, and 25 additional people are stsnding in the airplane aisle? WOW I can only imagine.

My husband and I have been working at only doing carry-on for all domestic air trips. We have been successful on the last two trips! We're going to San Francisco for 6 days in late August and will have our trusty carry-ons with us. Lets face it, most of us bring too much "stuff" on trips. Maybe this will make all of us a little more disciplined in our packing techniques!

People can complain all they want to. If you ask me charging people for everything separately is a great way to keep me from paying for services I dont use or want. I dont eat on planes...so buy ur food if u want it and dont add it to the price of my ticket. I pack light or ship my bags. so pay for your checked luggage instead of me. They can charge us to take a pee for all I care. Fuel prices is through the roof and airlines never make money anyways. By the way, first class passengers pay ten times what you do to fly so free baggage check is hardly a bargain for them. They also cover most of the expense of the flight, so thank them for your cheap ticket.

Are they going to start charging to use the toilet next?
by bob chase on Wednesday, May 21, 2008
This is such garbage. You can't win. You either pay the airlines $15.00 or you put $15.00 back into the economy purchasing all of the "toiletries" you can't put in your carry on bag. Toothpaste/shaving cream/shampoo blah, blah, blah! Why do I believe that if/when fuel costs EVER come back down--these additional charges won't go away!

Please make sure the wiring on the wheels of your checked baggage is done correctly. Otherwise, Americam will have to cancel 300 flights!

From now on, unless things change, I will be driving to US destinations. It is cheaper and more fun! I think AA is shooting itself in the foot by penalizing the only people who can keep them going (passengers). I haven't seen Southwest add these stupid fees, and they seem to be doing better than AA.

I'm so sick of being nickle-and-dimed to death! Giive a meal/snack depending on the length of the flight, include the 2 bags and charge a reasonable fare.

This charge for bag crap is ridiculous! Just charge a reasonable fare to include food & bags!

My God this is unbelievable. I'm just so sick of the airlines in this country I'm just not going to travel unless it's international Period.

hahaha great golden girls reference.
by flovebunny on Wednesday, May 21, 2008
So the people who could afford to pay the extra fee (first-class passengers) pay nothing extra???

That's ridiculous. At least charge HALF the cost we have to pay!!

by amanda on Wednesday, May 21, 2008
Uffda. Just what we need, *more* people cramming oversize baggage into the overhead bins. Hear that sound? That's the last fizzle of travel joy escaping my being.
by Sue-s on Wednesday, May 21, 2008
This is ridiculous! If the airlines want to save some money they can try firing a few execs! I'm sure that'd save them a bundle!
