Fares from Washington DC:

With peak summer travel to Europe being especially expensive this year, you may opt to go later in the season. If so, be sure and check out this Aer Lingus  sale on August/September travel from select US cities to Ireland. Here's what we found:

    • Boston to Dublin, advertised as $314 each-way for travel between August 1 and August 31. Using the Aer Lingus flexible search calendar, we had no trouble finding that $314 fare, available throughout most of August. We chose August 7 through August 15, and our total fare, with taxes and the works, came to $707 round-trip. These same dates on Orbitz also list Aer Lingus as the best non-stop deal for this route, but at a $784 round-trip. US Airways comes in at number two, with the best 1-stop flight of $718 round-trip.

    • Chicago to Shannon, advertised as $294 each-way for travel between September 1 and September 30. According to the flexible date calendar, this fare is only available on a handful of dates. We chose September 2 through September 10, and the final total, taxes and all, is $671 round-trip. The same search on Orbitz lists Aer Lingus as having the best non-stop deal, but for $682 round-trip. American Airlines is close behind, at $699 round-trip, non-stop.

    • Los Angeles to Dublin, advertised as $328 each-way for travel between September 1 and September 30. This fare is easy to find on the Aer Lingus calendar. We chose September 10 through September 20, which comes to $735 round-trip with taxes. Again, a follow-up search on Orbitz lists Aer Lingus as having the best deal for this trip, at $752 round-trip, which includes the Orbitz booking fee. The best 1-stop trip offered is $719 round-trip, segmented with Air Canada and American Airlines.

    • New York to Shannon, advertised as $199 each-way for travel between September 1 and September 30. This fare is easy to find, and available throughout the month. We went with September 13 through September 26, and our total fare, taxes and all, came to $481 round-trip. Orbitz lists Aer Lingus as having the best fare for this trip too, but at $524 round-trip, non-stop. Delta offers the next best fare, at $533 round-trip, non-stop.

In every instance we checked, Aer Lingus had the lowest fare. And remember, the early bird gets the worm: this sale expires May 29!
