On a return trip home to Charlotte, I had a layover in Chicago-O'Hare. After my flight was delayed multiple times over the course of 8 hours, it was finally cancelled around midnight due to mechanical problems. The next flight I could get out of Chicago was at 9:00 a.m. the next day. I was a single female traveling alone, so stranded in the Chicago airport at midnight was not my first choice of places to be. I had to find a hotel in an unfamiliar city, and walk about 2 miles to find the shuttle (which was scary enough in itself). Of course, I also did not have my luggage. United would not reimburse me for my hotel room, food, nothing. I couldn't even get a voucher for a free ticket to use at a later date, which I believe was the least they could do, granted I would be willing to fly United again. It's just so frustrating that airlines can get away with anything, while displaying such a lack of concern for customer service.

With mechanical problems you may have recourse (but not if it was that ole familiar Windy-City Weather....) Write a letter. Be as concise and brief as you possibly can. Be sugary-sweet (avoid 'I'll never fly you folks again' and 'I called your toll-free number and got someone in India with a heavy accent...") Add up the cost of your hotel, taxi & meals and round up. So, asking for a $200 voucher towards a future flight would be reasonable. Be specific what you wish UAL to do for you. Be professional. The damage is done. Now your goal should be to seek restitution. Hope you get results. It has worked for me 100% of the time with all carriers.

Per the Airline Regulations with NTSB and the FAA you should be able to get up to $400 restitution and a ticket at another time as compensation.

FYI. This is going to $800 restitution and a ticket at another time as compensation.

This is if you are delayed longer than the original flight would have gotten you to the new destination more than an hour.

You qualify.

Yes, the fire and brimstone approach does not get it with these folks. Syrup and Frosting does.
