Check out our Mumbai and Hanoi pages for booking details.

Rare Air India Sale

Posted by Bo Borre on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 2:38 AM to Europe/Africa/Middle East Airfares, Asia/Australasia Airfares

Last call for unadvertised Air India summer and autumn airfare sales with cheap flights and great deals to London, England; Paris, France; Delhi, India; and Mumbai (Bombay), India.

If you've been snoozing past the great Air India summer fares from New York to London and Paris, better sit up right now and take notice because there are still a few seats left. At several hundred dollars off the going rate, they're going fast and so should you! These are some of the best bargains to Europe this side of the Atlantic, so even if you're nowhere near New York, don't just sit there, get yourself over here to make your connection! Be aware that a cheap Paris date can be tricky to find at this point, but gets easier as fares fall into fall (see London and Paris fall fares).

On a different, but somewhat related, note, Air India also has some good deals for late summer travel to India, nonstop to Delhi and Mumbai for under $1,000. Check them out!

Beijing Olympics Fares

Posted by Bo Borre on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at 8:51 AM to Asia/Australasia Airfares

If you still got game and choose to put politics aside, it's not too late to get a decent deal to Beijing in time for the Olympics. By far the best fare we're finding these days is on China Southern Airlines from Los Angeles for $976 round-trip including taxes. It does involve a lengthy layover in Guangzhou, but the sizable savings should make it worth it, and even if you add the cost of a connecting flight to LAX from your hometown, you're still likely to come out far ahead.

Needless to say, this fare is only available for relatively few days of travel and a bit tricky to find, but we've pinned down at least 5 different itineraries for July and August travel. If all else fails, the same airline offers widely available non-stop flights to Guangzhou starting at $938 for peak summer travel. How you make your way from there is up to the adventurer in you.

Posted by Bo Borre on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 8:50 AM to Asia/Australasia Airfares

If you're looking to get some serious Bangkok for your buck, we've found a handful of great bargains for you. At up to almost half off prevailing rates from some cities, it's like getting a two-fer for you and your Siamese twin (or cousin or spouse or significant other).

This great floating city has it all, from palaces to temples to brothels, but whether your taste runs to royal, religious or red light, you'd better run fast to catch these deals that should leave you lots left over for paddle boats, phat thai and phat fashion accessories to bring back home. Now go live it up and Thai one on, the savings are on us and you'll find them all here!

Seoul Food Sale

Posted by Bo Borre on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at 9:19 PM to Asia/Australasia Airfares

To answer that age-old question of hardcore carnivores everywhere, Seoul is where the beef is. For those of you who like your meat red, rare, thinly sliced and lightly seared, the city might feel like one big hibachi with a potent side order of kimchi as a serious sidekick.

We've found some smoking fares that should get you all fired up and raring to go for as little as $660 from Portland, $780 from Denver or Minneapolis, and $830 from New York, all including taxes and all in April.

So stop playing chopsticks and pack your own favorite pair instead. Your table is waiting and you've got to get cracking while these hunks of burning coal are still hot. Check out what's cooking from your city right here!

Singapore for a Song

Posted by Bo Borre on Thursday, March 06, 2008 at 4:29 AM to Asia/Australasia Airfares

Actually, we're serving up a whole buffet of tasty fares to Singapore that won't have you singing for your dinner, but rather humming happily and rubbing your belly all the way across the Pacific. A little known outfit called Lessno really lives up to its name by sometimes offering dishy deals for much less, no less—in this case by shaving hundreds of dollars off the going rate of going there. Still, there's no such thing as one-stop shopping in the travel business and from some cities the better fares are found elsewhere, like Orbitz. Check out our Fare of the Day column for an appetizing sample before perusing the full mouth-watering menu.

Ginza Go-Go Fares

Posted by Bo Borre on Thursday, March 06, 2008 at 3:01 AM to Asia/Australasia Airfares

If you've got a yen to go to Japan in the near future, you may want to schedule your departure for the end of April or early May. While that may be too late to see the cherries bloom, it could also be your last chance for a good deal this side of summer.

American Airlines is having a mini-sale and nothing about these prices is lost in translation, so check out our list of very competitive fares from several dozens major airports and grab yours to go before they go the way of cherry blossoms.

From some cities, getting there in time for flower festivals will add less than the cost of Tokyo take-out to your ticket, and Northwest has its West Coast gateways awash in great non-stop fares like a month-long April shower of savings.

Your Ontario Exit Strategy

Posted by Bo Borre on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 8:56 AM to Europe/Africa/Middle East Airfares, Asia/Australasia Airfares

Quick, what's the cheapest way out of the country, barring a jump across the Rio Grande or a day-trip to Tijuana? In a word, Canada!

Even if you live as far away as Texas, California or Florida, it may be time to start thinking of our docile neighbor to the north as your new springboard to the world, with Toronto as your own private getaway gateway.

Ironically, getting to Canada is rarely a bargain, but as long as you promise not to stay you can cash in the savings on your onward journey. These days you'd be hard put to find a cheaper way to China, and Air Canada looks set to reprise its Oscar-winning performance as last year's low-price leader to London.

To cinch the deal, they have quietly extended their already low winter sale fares far into spring and even lowered some of them, just to shake off the competition. Fares for spring travel through end of April start around $450 from either coast and go up about $100 more from the Midwest and the Deep South.

Decent fares are also available to Zurich, which seems to be emerging as an unlikely bargain destination for travel to Central Europe this year.

Hosanna Asiana!

Posted by Bo Borre on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at 3:06 PM to Asia/Australasia Airfares

Korean Asiana Airlines is offering some crazy low fares to a number of Far East destinations, mostly from Los Angeles. Fares are not quite as jaw-dropping as they look at first blush, but they are still very handsome if you're lucky enough to find one.

Although advertised for $507, prices to Beijing and Hong Kong in fact start around $690. Another $40 will get you straight to Guangzhou, and $740 buys you a choice of Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. (Check out our Fare of the Day column for proof if you don't believe it.)

These deals are available for a very limited number of days starting in January or February at least through April. They probably won't last long and take some patience and persistence to track down, so better grab your price gun and start hunting now!

How to See More for Less Down Under

Posted by Bo Borre on Tuesday, January 01, 2008 at 9:26 PM to Asia/Australasia Airfares

After making that long-haul trek all the way across the Pacific to Australia or New Zealand, you will be no doubt be ready to get out and shake a leg. Whether you're on a business trip with meetings in several cities or a walkabout in the outback is more your pleasure, both Qantas and Air New Zealand have some great ways to keep you on the move on the cheap.

Air passes may not always be the amazing deals they claim to be, but the Qantas Aussie AirPass is almost better than advertised—a good deal at any time and an extraordinary bargain under the right circumstances. It essentially gives you a choice of 3 extra cities to visit in addition to your point of entry and even lets you return from a different airport, all at virtually no extra cost and sometimes for even less than the price of a standard return ticket to any one city.

For example, the best fare currently available to Sydney in May is $1,140 round-trip with taxes from Los Angeles.

Now pick up an Aussie AirPass and throw Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane into the mix, and the total price comes to $1,263.

In other words, you can tour the whole of Southeast Australia and Tasmania for only $120 more than the price of seeing Sydney alone, and the savings are even greater to other cities. Yes, even the math is magical in the Land of Oz!

Lest you think this all sounds a tad too good to be true, there are some limitations, of course. First of all, this is not a free pass to roam at will, because you must plan your entire itinerary at the time of booking. Furthermore,

  • Straying beyond Zone 1—which includes all major cities except Perth, but not major tourist attractions like Alice Springs and the Great Barrier Reef—will cost you at least $300 more.
  • Extending your stay beyond the maximum 3 weeks up to 3 months will set you back another $300.
  • Traveling outside the cheapest seasonal periods of May and August will add anywhere from $100 to $1,100 to the cost of your trip. It appears that you only need to start —not complete—your trip in any given period for that particular period fare to apply.
  • Leaving from cities other than Los Angeles or San Francisco tags on $90-360 if you buy your connecting flight through Qantas, but you can of course buy it separately and possibly for less.

The Aussie Airpass is on sale for travel through early December 2008.
