Airline baggage fees chart

Posted by George on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 to

Here we list, airline by airline, fees for checked bags on major US airlines. These fees are for domestic economy class travel (which in some cases includes Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Canada) only and may be higher on international flights.

There are all kinds of exceptions to these fees, especially for certain classes of frequent flyers and military personnel. These fees are cumulative and are double for round-trip travel. They are subject to change and were accurate to the best of our knowledge as of May 29, 2008.

If you're a heavy packer, you'll want to fly with Airtran, Alaska, Frontier and Southwest, even if there's a cheaper fare on another ailrine.

See also: shipping services (FedEx, UPS, etc) vs. the airlines.

Most interesting that the only airline making money is the only airline that doesn't charge for every little thing. Go Southwest!!!!!

By Dennis Taylor on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 7:48 PM

Found your info on checked bagage very helpful but how about including other airlines. There is a world outside of the USA.

By Katrina on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 9:04 PM

Why not just raise ticket prices? I think this is just a way for the airlines to sell ticket low then add all the fees on. I would rather pay more for my ticket and no fees to pay. What is next???

Great chart! And of course, Great Website.

Thanks

By Linda on Friday, May 30, 2008 at 4:20 PM

No! I don't want to pay more on MY ticket for all those packing-challenged people who think they have to bring everything but the kitchen sink in their suitcase. Let them pay for all those bags and all that weight, not me!

By jet on Friday, May 30, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Very helpful, thanks. Would be nice to include the allowable baggage dimensions for carry on as well.

By David G on Friday, May 30, 2008 at 7:17 PM

George, you're already out of date on Alaska. They announced bag fees this week.

By Richard Auth on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at 2:38 PM

Love the chart - Wish it was "printable" . It would also be nice to have the restrictions on carry on as well.

By Amy Alkon on Wednesday, June 04, 2008 at 11:48 AM

Anybody know if you can pay with a credit card at the Skycap?

By Sonny on Thursday, June 12, 2008 at 11:46 AM

United charging $15 for first bag, beginning with tickets bought on June 13, 2008 and after.

By kevin on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 8:55 AM

well this is really going to fuck over all of us who ski and snowboard in the winter with an extra $100 on every flight.

By Erika on Monday, July 07, 2008 at 4:13 PM

Have there been any additional fee increases since you posted the Baggage fee list by airline on your blog 5/28/08.By the way this is a very helpful list ,thanks I am in the travel expense department an this will come in handy

By Mike on Thursday, July 10, 2008 at 11:06 AM

Recently charged $50 (not $29) by AirTran for oversized bag. Creative (and rude) agent measured my bag along the curved edges (as opposed to side to side) and this added 4 inches. When I questioned it she said "pay the $50 or get out of line".

By Davin Peterson on Friday, July 25, 2008 at 8:16 AM

Notice that Southwest is one of two airlines that doesn't charge for a second bag. That is because they are one of the few profitable US airlines.

By Paula on Friday, July 25, 2008 at 12:03 PM

Great chart - would like to see a column added for golf/sports equipment.

By janine on Friday, July 25, 2008 at 1:15 PM

if week bought tickets before they decided to charge for luggage - do we have to pay the fee?

By R.M. on Wednesday, July 30, 2008 at 3:10 PM

Alaska's baggage policies have changed. They are charging effective 07/01/08. Just a note to those reading up on this subject.
