Is airfarewatchdog "just a big joke"?

Posted by George on Thursday, December 13, 2007

That's what "justlookinforcheapairfare" ranted on our message boards recently, because he or she couldn't find a $200 RT fare from Philly to San Juan that we had posted.

"The 'best' price each time was over $500!! I don't know why I bother with this website," this person whines.

Well, he was right. The lowest fare wasn't $200. It was actually $165 plus tax on that route, for January travel, and if only he had read our user's guide (where we distill over a decade of experience in hunting for low airfares) then perhaps he'd be sunning and not whining. For proof, we show a real booking from Travelocity for this route on our Fare of the Day page, where you can see evidence of many other crazy low fares.

Believe it or not, we get nice emails from people every day saying how much they like Airfarewatchdog. But we thought it would be useful for newbies poking around the site wondering what we're all about,  if those of you who like the site left comments here (to counteract posts on our message boards from people like "justlookin". Have you found a fab fare that we listed?  Brag about it so that new visitors to our site will see the value of sticking around!

Just click on the add a comment link and share the love.

I have been using this website for at least 3 years. I have always been alerted to the lowest fares and have booked some great ones: $174 RT Denver to Boston.

I have told numerous people and given out lots of business cards and all seem content with the website using.

I won't said Airfarewatchdog is a joke. I have gotten good fare thanks for Airfarewatchdog's tip. But it is not always a straight forward process. I sympathize with those who feel they are duped.

Some fare are easier to find than others. For example Airfarewatchdog deep link into Orbitz's flexible search result. The entire month's fare is spreaded in front of you so that you can cherry pick the few dates with a low rate. It is only a few selected dates within a month but I think it is fair enough.

For other websites, especially aa.com, Airfarewatchdog only link to its main page. I have to reenter the search myself with a specific date and I've never found anything remotely close to what has advertised. This is actually consistent with the airline's own promotion. Often I see deals like LA to Cancun for $2xx. Instead of simply selling me at that fare, the website direct me to do a search. The result is never remotely close to what has advertised. So much that I just consider this a bait and switch promotion.

I'm sure Airfarewatchdog do not make the fare up themselves. But I think they can better educate us to actually net the elusive fare as it is often not seen in a straight search.

We do our best to direct users to the fares, but in the case of AA.com and Southwest.com, it's not possible (Southwest won't allow it and AA isn't set up for it). To our credit, we don't get paid by either airline to send them traffic, and doing so actually undercuts our revenue (if we sent everyone just to Travelocity, we would get paid, on the same routes). Again, I think if you read our users guide carefully, you'll understand how we operate better. It's all about choosing the right dates. Some dates of travel will be higher than others for the same route.

everyone has an opinion about travel, this is my first year to use the airfarewatchdog website, i think it's good, the editors have expanded the number of airports available for airfares to and from, i officiate sports, not everyone will always agree with you on a call, but if you are in the right position and understand the rules, you make what you believe is the correct call, travel seems to be a little easier, you find out the rules and the cost and make a decision

This one of the best sites i've found. It's really helpful. I gotta real cheap fares for some trips I've made this year. And of course some of the fares are not easy to find. The airlines not gonna make available the whole plane for these cheap fares. They have to make the break-even. I highly recommend this site to anyone. And I am a big fan of Mr. Hobica. Happy Holidays for all.

great site. i have taken three trips alone this year using your website for fare prices. i have also handed out numerous business cards for your site. good job.

If you don't want people to comment honestly on their misadventures with your website, why don't you just delete them all instead of giving a BS response the way you did. I have--in earnest-- looked for cheap airfare (specifically, as cheap as you have posted) for over 6 months, with no success. I have a very flexible schedule and am not demanding at all. It's just bad PR for you to dismiss comments like mine as "whining".

I love it. We showed you proof that the fare you complained about not only was bookable, but it was $35 less than we said! What more do you want from us? The vast majority of people, if they follow our user's guide, do find the fares we list. But you can't please everyone.

I was able to book the most amazing vacation for our family thru airfarewatchdog. Nobody believed me when I said what I paid. I spent several weeks checking and waiting for the ideal airfare which then led me to an amazing hotel and airfare deal and it was a DEAL!! That's why it's important to search other site within airfarewatchdog.

Personally I have found your advertised fares accurate many times and I assume others have as well. Of course, not all fools know how to effectively search for flights on the Internet. Your process may not be idiot proof but whenever your user base is the general public nothing is. I appreciate very much what you do and enjoy the Q&A section particularly.

I love and appreciate your great website. Thank you to all the "Watchdogs!" Go team!

I personally don't understand why someone would post such a rude thing. I saw the post and got offended. This site offers a great service for nothing. I check it out every day because it saves me a ton of time and effort.

Well done Airfarewatchdog crew! Keep up the great work!

Okay, for some reason, my comments keep getting cut off and completely misconfigured. Here goes one more time:

I am thrilled with your service. I booked a flight to Canada per your info and saved half from what I paid earlier and this time I even booked later. My daughter also found low fares to England in comparison to what she had booked before. Keep up your good work. I have forwarded you to all my friends.
