The TSA attempts to answer "Why?"

Posted by Andrew on Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Our friends at The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and The Ad Council have joined forces to get the word out to airline passengers about "why" some procedures need to be implemented at the security checkpoints. It is no coincidence that they started pushing this ad campaign now, since the busiest travel week of the year is upon us. An estimated 24 million people will travel during the Thanksgiving holiday week.

TSA Assistant Administrator for Strategic Communications and Public Affairs Ellen Howe wants passengers to understand what they are in store for when they arrive at the airport. "TSA encourages passengers to know the rules and be prepared when they reach the security checkpoint. Your safety is the priority of our security officers and you can contribute to a smoother process at the checkpoint."

Here are a few of the questions TSA have answered on their website:

Why do I have to take off my shoes?

Why do I have to put my three ounce liquids in a zip-top plastic bag?

For all the lovely rules put into place to ensure a more enjoyable experience at the airport, check out TSA.gov.

Air Canada offering up to 50% off airfare.

Posted by Andrew on Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Air Canada, the country's largest airline, has some great one way and round trip deals to  "The Great White North" this winter that will make you scream "Oh Canada!" Plus Canada is one of the few countries left where the U.S. dollar is more favorable in the exchange rate. For example as of today, for every U.S. dollar you hand over up North, expect 1.24 Canadian in return.

Here are a few sample fares I came across while checking out their site. (Round trip with taxes and fees included):

  • December 8 -14: Newark (EWR) - Toronto (YYZ), $219
  • January 6 - 12:    San Francisco (SFO) - Vancouver (YVR), $247
  • January 20 - 26:  Milwaukee (MKE) - Toronto (YYZ), $241
  • February 1 - 7:     Manchester (MHT) - Halifax (YHZ), $405
  • February 3 -10:   Las Vegas (LAS) - Calgary (YYC), $268

Book by November 20, 2008 and travel by February 11, 2009. You must purchase at least 5 days in advance and Air Canada allows two free checked bags.

As always make sure to check online fares to ensure that you receive the lowest deal. Check out Air Canada for full terms and conditions.

Last minute holiday travelers need not worry, because Aer Lingus is offering a very tempting winter sale until this Friday November 21, 2008 to the two popular cities of Shannon and Dublin. Prices for one way travel on the Irish Airline start as low as $199 (before taxes and fees).  Here is a sampling of the deals found on Aer Lingus’ website (round trip, taxes and fees included):

December 5 - 12: Washington (IAD) - Shannon (SNN), $515.53
December 7 - 15: Boston  (BOS) - Dublin (DUB), $508.13
January 13 - 21:    New York (JFK) - Dublin (DUB), $493.13
January 21 - 29:    Chicago (ORD) - Dublin (DUB), $493.13

So pack your four leaf clovers, download Lord of the Dance on your iPod, practice your jig and prepare yourself for the Guinness hangovers, because this December and January Ireland is on sale. (I apologize in advance to my Irish born grandmother for those awful Irish clichés.)

Southwest to fly into New York LaGuardia

Posted by George on Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Ben Mutzabaugh reports in his USA Today "Today in the Sky" blog that Southwest Airlines plans to "add New York LaGuardia as its newest destination. With the move, Southwest throws yet another surprise at industry observers who had been trying to forecast where the USA's largest low-cost carrier would fly next." Southwest has in the past avoided airports such as LaGuardia, which is prone to traffic and weather delays. Just this week, the airport was virtually shut down due to high winds, a fact I can attest to since my flight from Ft. Lauderdale via JetBlue this past Sunday was diverted to Kennedy.
